Celebrating Disability Pride Month with Legal Services of the Hudson Valley

Disability Pride Month is observed in July, honoring individuals with disabilities, their identities, culture, and valuable contributions to society. As Disability Pride Month ends, it is important to recognize the essential services that Legal Services of the Hudson Valley (LSHV) offers to individuals with disabilities. LSHV is among some of the most unique organizations that offer essential services to people with physical, intellectual, and emotional disabilities and plays an important role in advocating for their rights and needs. By providing comprehensive legal assistance, we ensure that these individuals have access to crucial public benefits and are protected against discrimination in various spheres of life.

We assist clients in applying for, or appealing the denial or termination of, critical public benefits such as Social Security/Social Security Disability (SSD) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). These programs are lifelines for many, offering financial stability to those who are unable to work due to their disabilities. Additionally, LSHV addresses issues of housing discrimination, access to rehabilitation programs, transportation needs, and employment rights to create a more inclusive society. Our organization also extends its support to individuals suffering from mental illness, helping them secure lost benefits that were particularly vital during the isolation brought on by the pandemic.

Moreover, LSHV advocates for individuals and families affected by HIV/AIDS, offering legal support on matters ranging from discrimination and housing to HIV confidentiality, disability, Medicaid and permanency planning. Under Article 27-F, LSHV ensures that confidential HIV-related information is protected, reducing the risk of discrimination and harm. This holistic approach reinforces LSHV’s commitment to protecting the privacy and dignity of those living with HIV/AIDS while ensuring they receive the benefits and services they need.

The Disability Advocacy Project, a cornerstone of LSHV’s offerings, was established through New York State Social Services Law and has been instrumental in supporting low-income individuals with disabilities. By assisting with the filing of claims or appeals for SSI and SSDI benefits, LSHV helps clients achieve financial stability. Successful appeals not only enhance the quality of life for individuals but also contribute to the local economy as beneficiaries spend their federal benefits within their communities. Through extensive outreach and education, LSHV ensures that as many eligible individuals as possible are aware of and can access these vital services.

During Disability Pride Month and beyond, the work that we do exemplifies the importance of legal advocacy in empowering individuals with disabilities. By addressing a broad spectrum of legal issues and ensuring access to essential benefits, LSHV fosters a more inclusive and equitable society for all.
