LSHV Participates in Anti-Bullying Walk-a-thon

Emily Kirby, Children’s Law Attorney at Legal services of the Hudson Valley, organized  team LSHV to  raise our voice against bullying by joining the  anti-bullying walkathon  sponsored by the Mediation Center of Dutchess  County on  April 27th.   Staff, friends and furry family members joined with children, seniors, local politicians and others  to bring awareness  of the  Hudson Valley’s commitment to zero tolerance of bullying.

The Attorney General, Eric T. Schneiderman held a press conference in Poughkeepsie on January 16 to announce the early results of the Homeowner Protection Program. In his press release he mentions the work that LSHV does in the Hudson Valley to protect homeowners from foreclosure. In particular he quoted a homeowner whom Meghan Mazzacone, a staff attorney at LSHV, had represented in court. Read all about it.

 

JP Morgan Chase Donates to LSHV

Lanza Children's Law Center Dedication Ceremony:

LSHV held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to inaugurate our Lanza Children's Law Center, named for our longtime Children's Unit supporter and good friend Pat Lanza.

The event was attended by staff, board members, and clients who enjoyed refreshments and festivities - including face paint and cupcakes for the children. Executive Director Barbara Finkelstein and board member Lucille Oppenheim congratulated Ms. Lanza on her wide-reaching commitment to children and acknowledged her longtime support of LSHV's work on behalf of children. A ribbon cutting was held at the newly landscaped front entrance to the building on 90 Maple St. following which LSHV Board President Al Donnellan presented Ms. Lanza with a plaque commemorating the dedication of the Center. The ceremony culminated with a champagne toast to the continued growth of LSHV's work on behalf of children.

Attorneys in the Lanza Children's Law Center will focus on protecting the rights of low-income and underserved children including homeless children, children in foster care, and those in residential facilities. The mission of the Center is to ensure that these children receive the educational services, medical care and safe housing to which they are entitled.

Replacement SNAP Benefits Announced

 SNAP benefits to replace food lost due to Hurricane Sandy will be provided to recipients in Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk, Sullivan, and Westchester Counties under a waiver provided to New York State from the USDA. 50% of each recipient's October monthly SNAP benefit amount will be deposited into their Electronic Benefit account. SNAP recipients in these areas will also be able to purchase hot and prepared food with their benefits.

This action is automatic; no paperwork required.

Other households (not in ther identified counties) that lost food due to the Hurricane are also entitled to replacement benefits and must report the loss by November 28th and return a signed and completed form by December 10, 2012 to their local DSS. The link to the 2291 Form can be found here:

LSHV has received a $5,000 grant from TD Bank to conduct household financial literacy workshops in key areas of Westchester County. LSHV attorneys will outline strategies for housing emergencies and economic instability. Presentation sites: TD Bank branches in Mount Kisco, White Plains, Port Chester, Mamaroneck, and Yorktown; and public libraries in Yonkers, Mount Vernon, and New Rochelle.

LSHV's Development Department and Marie Rossi of Successful Events recently received the 2012 BIG W Gold Award from the Advertising Club of Westchester for promotion materials created for the Children's Advisory Fund Celebration held in May 2011.
